District to begin looking for new leader

The Colleton County School Board voted unanimously Monday night to officially begin searching for a new superintendent without hiring an outside consulting firm to aid them in their efforts.

The board met in a special meeting on Monday night to discuss the superintendent search and other district matters. The board’s vote allows the board to create a special search committee to find the district’s new leader. The school board’s search committee will then begin advertising for the position, taking resumes and applications from potential candidates and then screening those candidates.

“It’s a cost-saving measure,” school District Attorney Bert Duffie said about the board’s decision to keep the search internal.

This internal search process is how the board hired its immediate and previous superintendent, Leila Williams. The district’s other previous superintendents, however, were selected by using an outside hiring agency.

Currently, the district is being led by Interim Superintendent Dr. Franklin Foster. Foster was the district’s Human Resources director until his appointment as interim superintendent in 2014: his appointment came when the board voted to terminate Williams in the midst of several investigations.

Foster will act as interim superintendent through the 2014-2015 school year. He is currently acting as the district’s superintendent and HR directors.
