This past Saturday morning Colleton Prep Academy hosted a three-team controlled scrimmage at Warhawks Field. With a 10 a.m. start a good crowd was on hand to watch Pinewood, Edisto and CPA work on plays and execution for the upcoming season. A controlled scrimmage enables coaches to actually be on the field watching and coaching after each play. CPA head coach Rob Gorrell shared some observations he took away from the scrimmage. “ Overall I saw a lot of positives to take away from it. Pinewood played for the 3A State Championship last year and Edisto is a 2A public school and I thought we held on our own with them. On defense I was pleased with the good effort and they tackled well except for a couple of plays. They were very disciplined on their assignments and they didn’t score on us all day. Offensively, we have stuff to clean up in regards to blitzes and such. Our first series was pretty darn good. I also thought the QB’s played well except for one interception. They had good decisions and threw the ball well. We have a lot of teaching points to take away from it. We have a scrimmage on Friday and the goal is to continue to improve. I believe we are way ahead of last year. Williamsburg will be coming here in a few weeks. I owe them one, as they beat us last year.We just need to look to week one and keep working.”
As a parent of a Pinewood player was watching his son in Warhawks field, he shared how impressed he was with the crowd gathered for the scrimmage saying it was a visual example of a CPA program on the rise.
