Colleton County earned their first region win on Tuesday, January 26 against Ashley Ridge. The Cougars defeated the Swamp Foxes, 59-42, in a home match-up that saw Tristan Nieves put up 19 points.
Dee Ferguson contributed 11 points for the Cougars, while Nyheem Green added 10 points of his own. Viktor Payne had six points with 11 rebounds and Justin Williams had seven points and seven rebounds.
“Williams and Payne gave us second chance opportunities with their rebounding,” said Coach Maurice Simmons. “That was a key factor that helped us seal the win.”
The Cougars would host Summerville on Friday, January 29, for Senior Night. Colleton County would come close to an upset in a 67-62 loss against the Green Wave. Green would lead the Cougars, scoring 19 points and collecting seven rebounds.
Tristan Nieves had 16 points and six assists, while Trey Murray netted seven points. “Nyheem fouled out with less than two minutes remaining in the game, with us trailing,” said Coach Simmons. “With less than a minute remaining, we were down by just one point. A mishandle and a foul would send the Green Wave to the line for the win. The guys played hard and with passion, showing growth from their earlier game against Summerville. Now, we will finish out the rest of the season on the road and look for a strong finish.”
The junior varsity lost a nail-biter to Ashley Ridge, 40-39. Steffon Denmark led in scoring with 12 points. Bruce Benjamin had six points and Lance Calcutt added four. “We will be working toward taking better care of the ball in pressure situations and limiting our turnovers,” said Coach Leon Hammonds.
On Friday, January 29, the junior varsity team defeated Summerville, 55-42, to improve to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in region play. Bruce Benjamin led with 10 points and three rebounds. Denmark had nine points and three rebounds, AJ Patterson had seven points and one rebound, while Shykem Chisolm and Javon Williams scored six points each.
“We started out the game slow, allowing Summerville to jump out to a 11-0 lead before we closed it to 17-9 to end the first quarter,” said Coach Hammonds. “We picked up the pace and established an inside presence with Bruce Benjamin and AJ Patterson scoring baskets, respectively. The second half we outscored the Green Wave by three points and finished the game on a 19-8 run. The defense sparked our comeback and we just played great team defense. We are on a mission to finish out the season with three straight wins. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported us at each and every home game this season.”
The Cougars are scheduled to play Bluffton (away) on Tuesday, February 2, Fort Dorchester on Friday, February 5 (away), and Ashley Ridge on Thursday, February 11.
