City of Walterboro Tourism Director position becomes open as Spires moves on

Christan Spires

Since June 2018, the City of Walterboro’s Tourism Director position has been filled by a native who moved back to her roots to help see the positive change she wanted for her hometown. Christan Spires has served in the role as proved to be a shining star while serving Colletonians. Spires is very thankful for some of the amazing relationships she has formed and hopes others are happy with the way she gave back to her community.
Since serving in the role of City of Walterboro’s Tourism Director, Spires says she is very proud of two things. First, she implemented the “First Thursday” monthly event. Each month on the first Thursday, folks could come from near and far to celebrate Walterboro and what it had to offer on East Washington Street. The event showcased the numerous boutiques, gift shops, antique stores, and restaurants located in our downtown area. Spires would also have live music, games for children and adults to play as well as lots of participation from those local businesses. She is excited to see how this event will continue to grow and says she can’t wait to see how it develops over the next year.
Spires also was very instrumental in the opening of the Walterboro Wildlife Center. Spires raves that the Wildlife Center is an amazing facility and show the potential of Walterboro’s future. She enjoyed watching the construction of the center and the amphitheater and can’t wait to see the future programming for both.
Although Spires is resigning from serving the City of Walterboro as Tourism Director, she does plan to continue serving in other ways.

She will continue to serve the community through her roles with the Rice Festival, Walterboro Criterium and with the South Carolina Artisans Center. “My decision to resign from my position has been very difficult. I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take on my next role as the Director of Public Relations for Colleton County Medical Center and I am eager to see where this opportunity leads me,” said Spires.
Spires concluded her interview by saying, “It has been a true joy to work for the City of Walterboro. I want to thank Jeff Molinari and Hank Amundson, Mayor Young and City Council for the tremendous amount of mentorship and guidance they have given me over the past year and a half.” As of our print deadline, the City of Walterboro officials were working on a plan on how to replace Spires. We will update our readers as soon as we are made aware of what those plans may be.
