City Christmas Parade Draws Thousands

Walterboro’s evening and annual Christmas Parade drew an estimated 3,000 people on Saturday night, as the crowds came together to watch dozens of participants glide through the city’s streets.

Walterboro Tourism Director Michelle Strickland says this is the first year that the city has taken a directorship role in the Christmas Parade. She believes the city’s leaders using its Web site and an online application for parade participants helped to boost the number of entries.

The parade was followed by the city’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. At this ceremony, the Northside Elementary School Honors Chorus sang to the crowd.

The city’s Christmas Tree was also adorned with personal ornaments, all brought to the tree by members of the public. “The tree is used as a way to honor residents who have passed during the year,” said Strickland.

The parade winners are:

In the Religious Category: Green Pond Baptist Church took first place; The Well at Jones Swamp Church Kids and Youth won second place; and Ashton Baptist Church won third place.

In the Non-Commercial Division: Girl Scout Troop No. 981 won first place; the Cottageville Church of the Nazarene won second place; and the Colleton County Veterans Council took third place.

In the Marching Unit: the Colleton County High School Band of Blue won first place; the Colleton County All Stars Travel Youth Cheerleaders won second place; and the Colleton County High School NJROTC took third place.

In the Commercial Division: Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union won first place; the Colleton County Rice Festival received second place; and the Coastal Kids Dental and Braces took third place.
The Pentecostals of Walterboro won Honorable Mention.
