Chris Collins will continue to lead the Cougars in 2015-16’

Rest assured…Colleton County High School Cougar Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Chris Collins will be returning to prowl the sidelines of Cougar Field next year.

Over the past several weeks, rumors began surfacing that Collins was a finalist for the Head Football Coach of AAAA Region VI Sumter High School. In an interview at the time, Collins stated that he had not interviewed for the job, and sources confirmed that information.

However, Collins did make a trip to Sumter on Monday and interviewed, before a committee, for the position of Head Coach of the Sumter Fighting Gamecocks. According to sources, Collins was in the top two for final consideration.

Collins released the following statement to Sumter on Thursday afternoon, and after meeting with his Cougar coaches and players this morning (Friday), announced the following:

“After discussing the possibility of going to Sumter High School with my family, and taking the time to reflect on this opportunity, I have decided to withdraw from consideration for the Sumter High School Head Football Coach position. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I look forward to leading the Cougars in 2015 and continuing to build our athletic program.”

Collins, who led the Cougars to the playoffs for the first time since 2007, won the first region game since 2009, had a winning record at home, and had the best over record (5-7) since 2007, will quite possibly be fielding his best all-around team next season. His depth across the roster could be stronger than Colleton County has seen in a decade or longer. Collins will have 19 starters returning and a talented, well-recruited senior class to assume leadership roles.

Check back with The Colletonian for more information as we speak to coach Collins later today.
