On Friday morning, August 5, the 2016 CCHS girls tennis season officially got under way. It was a hot morning but the squad was all about the conditioning needed to perform in the season’s matches ahead of them. Head Coach Allyson Griffin begins her fifth season at the helm and is very excited about the season ahead.
“We’re got a lot of talent on our team this year. There are two new players and nine returning from last year’s squad. There is one Senior with three Juniors plus an 8th-grader. A lot of these girls have played through the summer so they are ready. I can’t say it enough but we do have a lot of talent on this team. Our first match will be home August 30th but I am playing phone tag with some coaches and would like to schedule one also August 22nd. We are starting a little late in the game with practices so there will be no scrimmages. I am looking forward to the start of the season. With the talent we have there is the potential for a winning season.”
When asked where the Coach got her passion for the game Griffin responded, “This is my fifth year as coach but I started playing tennis as a little girl. In high school I played on the boy’s team. I also played tennis for two years at Columbia College and I have always enjoyed it!”
Observing the first practice one could see this team will be in shape to play the matches to the fullest of their abilities. The tennis court was transformed into a place of exercises to stretch the athletes to get in the best shape possible. As one member shared how hard it was, a teammate yelled encouragement. The team is already starting to come together.
