CCHS Boys Basketball Season Comes To An End

The Colleton County High School Cougars Boy Basketball team hosted North Myrtle Beach, on February 12th, in the first round of playoffs. It was an exciting game, with the score going back and forth, but the Cougars came out on top, winning 71 to 61. CCHS Head Boys Basketball Coach Matthew Mullins said, “Going into the game, I wasn’t sure which North Myrtle Beach team would show up. Their record is middle of the pack, but they have some good wins against teams like Darlington and Hartsville. Thankfully we came out on top. Devon Farmer stepped up big for us off the bench. We were getting beat on the glass early and he came in and gave us a spark. He helped us on the defensive end of the floor as well as guarding some of their players and then rotating over to help some of our smaller guards. Next we’ll host a good Hartsville team. We’re looking forward to the challenge and hoping to continue to make Walterboro proud.” Top scorers were: Stephan Gadson-21pts, Devon Farmer-13pts, Bailey Encalade and Shy Chisolm-12pts each, Sherrill Alex-8pts, Antawn Griffin, Jr-4pts and Jermaine Parker-3pts.
On Saturday, the Cougars hosted Hartsville Red Foxes in the second round of playoffs. The Cougars came up short, losing 70 to 80, ending a great season for them. Coach Mullins said, “Hate for the season to end but only one team can win the whole thing. The game tonight was back and forth, very competitive high level game. I think if Stephan hadn’t fouled out, maybe we could have maDe a few more free throws, or keep Hartsville, Trae Hanibal, off the Free Throw line we could have come out with a win. We were right there in the fourth quarter, but could never get over the hump. But credit to Hartsville, They are a very good team and the Hanibal kid that is going to play at USC really put his team on his back in the second half. The top scorers were: Stephan Gadson-19pts, Bailey Encalade-18pts, Alex Sherrill-17pts, Devon Farmer-6pts, Shy Chisolm and Silas Holmes-4pts each and Jermaine Parker-2pts.
“I am extremely proud of everything this team has accomplished this year. It’s been talked about a lot and it should be. First team in Colleton history to win a region championship, undefeated in conference, 19-8 overall, Encalade gets region player of the year, B.Encalade, A.Griffin and S.Gadson all make all-region and we finished the regular season ranked in the top 10 for 4-A after not being ranked all year. Not a lot of dry eyes in the locker room after the game, but I told them I was proud to see that. It shows that this meant something to them. We told the seniors thank you and we’ll never forget what they helped build. I am excited about the guys returning. We’ll have some big shoes to fill, but if we have a strong commitment to this offseason, we can be just as competitive next year.”
If you see any of these young boys or coaches out in the community, please congratulate them on their accomplishments on the season. Way to go Cougars!
