The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating why two people who were stopped for speeding at Edisto Beach on Wednesday were intoxicated and had blood on their clothes.

According to an incident report, the male driver - who is from Orangeburg - was stopped for speeding near Bi-Lo at the beach after he was clocked traveling 61 in a 45-mph zone. The man was impaired, the report states, while the female passenger is described as being “extremely impaired,” and was slumped over. The male driver had scratches on his arms and blood on his shirt. According to the report, the man claimed to have been planting strawberries, explaining the red stains and scratches.

Both were charged with various alcohol violations and were transported to the Colleton County Detention Center in Walterboro. The sheriff’s office Criminal Investigations Division is investigating this. No other details are available at this time.
