Bicycling is more than just exercise

Most of us remember learning to ride a bicycle as a kid. We would ride our bicycle every day and everywhere our parents would let us ride. As adults we should strive to have that same type of enthusiasm about riding a bicycle as we did when we were a kid.

There are tons of health benefits associated with riding a bicycle. First of all it is one of the easiest exercises you can do and you can ride almost anywhere at any time of the year without spending a fortune. All you need is a bike and a little time to enjoy the great outdoors. Riding a bicycle will build overall strength, stamina and endurance since it engages every single part of your body when you ride. It enhances muscle tone in your legs, thighs, rear end and hips while improving general muscle function with little risk of sprains or strain. It is also great for better mobility in your hips and knee joints.

Riding your bicycle regularly will help your heartbeat in a steady rhythm. This will raise your heart rate improving cardio-vascular fitness by 3-7% and can reduce your risk of coronary heart disease by 50%. Best of all, it’s a good way to lose some unwanted pounds to maintain a healthy body weight. A relaxing bike ride will burn 281 more calories than the 176 from an easy walk. It will also boost your metabolism rate long after you finish your ride. It can reduce stress, improve well-being, self-esteem and take your mind off of everyday life stressors to rejuvenate the body, mind and soul.

Bicycling has become more than just a fun exercise around the country, it has become a movement. Trails and bike lanes are being implemented everywhere to accommodate a multitude of riders who choose to ride a bike instead of driving a car. More people are choosing to ride their bicycle to work, school and various places and events.

Not only is it good for your health, it’s good for the environment with less gas and fumes emitted in the air. When you are driving in your car and there is not a bicycle lane please practice caution and lookout for them. Remember they want to reach their destination safely on their bicycle just as you expect to reach yours safely in your car.

Over this past weekend Stacy Price, her husband Corey and son Corky along with Ron Gorrell did just that. They left the car at home and decided to ride their bicycles from Walterboro to Beaufort. Stacy said, “This is a goal that I set for myself this year and the guys decided to ride along and help me accomplish my goal”. You’ll often see Stacy, Ron and many others riding around town. When you see them please share the road. If you are a rider please “Ride Right” and follow the bicycle rules of the road.

Stay tuned for stories of bike rides across the many great trails in South Carolina including our very own Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary in Walterboro, Donnelley Wildlife Management Area in Green Pond and the Spanish Mount Trails at Edisto Beach State Park.
