Bells moving forward with new design firm

The Colleton County School Board is one step closer to begin building a new Bells Elementary School.

In a special board meeting held on Monday night, the school board voted unanimously to hire the Lillio Architecture Firm to design the new school. With that decision now under its belt, district leaders will soon begin meeting with the school’s staff to start designing the new elementary school.

Working with the Lillio firm will give the district a boost in building the school, which is being funded through a recently-passed $10 million bond referendum. Approximately $7.5 million of that $10 million will be used to build the new Bells Elementary School. The rest of the funds are allocated toward districtwide security and transportation upgrades.

According to school district Superintendent Dr. Franklin Foster, the new school will be built on the same campus in front of the current school. This choice will allow students to continue forward without demolishing one piece of the school at a time as the building process progresses, said Foster. “It will be a total build on site with the students on the property,” he said.

With the new school’s construction set to begin by late spring, students at Bells will still attend school throughout the fall while construction is underway, said Foster.

Construction will also not hinder any summer migrant programs routinely held at the rural Bells school, he said. “We will demolish the current building when construction on the new school is complete,” said Foster.

The new Bells Elementary School is set to open at the start of the 2015-2016 school year.

UPDATE: The new Bells Elementary School is set to open at the start of the 2015-2016 school year.

The Colleton County School Board at a special meeting on Monday, January 26th unanimously approved for Liollio Architecture to provide design services in the amount of $438,400 for the new Bells Elementary facility.  Bells Elementary is projected to be a 45,000 sq. ft. facility for 350 students with a fast track design and construction schedule to meet the district’s goal of occupying the school in August of 2016.
