Band of Blue Winter Ensemble teams bring home new titles

The Band of Blue’s Winter Ensemble teams competed in this past weekend’s 2020 Carolina Winter Ensembles Association’s Regional Contest and brought home a second and fifth place ranking.
The Feb. 15th regional contest was hosted by the Band of Blue’s Booster Club. Nearly 40 parents and students helped to host about 26 teams that participated in the event.
Colleton County Middle School’s Cadet Winter Guard placed second in their class in the contest. Additionally, the Colleton County High School Varsity team placed fifth in the Scholastic AAA division.
Because of these rankings, the Band of Blue Winter Percussion was promoted to Scholastic A-Class in Percussion. According to Band of Blue Director Tom Finigan, more than 75 students from Colleton County High and Middle School participate in the winter ensemble programs.
Clay Blackwood and Ryan Krywinski lead the winter percussion team programs, with leadership assistance from Bailey Raez, Jason Johnson and Cathy Meshach.
Now, the Band of Blue is participating in the South Carolina Band Directors Association Region 4-A Band Clinic, which will be held at Charleston Southern University on Feb. 21-22nd. Additionally, the newly-formed CCHS Band of Blue Big Blue Jazz Band will perform on Saturday, Feb. 29th at the South Carolina Band Directors Association’s State Jazz Festival, held at Newberry College.
William Finigan takes honors at band clinic
In other Band of Blue news, member William Finigan recently attended the University of South Carolina Band Clinic in Columbia. Held from February 13-16th, the USC Band Clinic hosted more than 400 students from across several states, including South Carolina.
“The goal of the clinic is to expose students to outstanding clinicians and masterclasses,” said Band of Blue Director Tom Finigan. “Students also attended several concerts on campus at the Koger Center for the Arts.”
William Finigan was selected to the USC Honor Band, conducted by Dr. Caroline Beatty
from Texas State University. He also took the 2nd-chair ranking in the group for the third year in a row. Earlier this month, William Finigan was also named to the 2020 SCBDA Senior All-State Band, and he will perform at Furman University in March.
