Band of Blue to host CWEA Winter Ensemble Event on Saturday

The Band of Blue will be hosting the 2015 Carolina Winter Ensemble Association Winter Competition this Saturday, February 28 at Colleton County High School. A large crowd is anticipated to be in town for the event, as it is very similar to the Walterboro Band Classic, but held indoors in the gym at Colleton County High School.

With 31 Winter Guards and Drumlines scheduled to be in town this Saturday, from across South Carolina, it is the first of its kind at to be held at Colleton County High School. Guards will perform routines to pre-recorded music and percussion groups perform theme based shows with their own musical arrangements. They will be judged on their choreography, interpretation and movement of music, marching and the effect of their shows according to Finigan.

Winter Ensembles are one of the newest trends in contemporary marching arts. According to Band of Blue Director Tommy Finigan, the days of just marching in parades or at half-time of the ball game are just not enough. “To be competitive, you need to march and play almost year round to keep your skills fine-tuned,” said Finigan in his release. “It is an honor to be selected to host this event. Our Winter Guard program has grown leaps and bounds and this is the next step for our program to host.”

Finigan, praised the hard work of Stacey Miller, Guard Coordinator and assistants, William Thomas and Keivy Lingard with the Band of Blue “Varsity” and the CCMS “Cadet” team. “We also have a Winter Percussion Ensemble competing this year too,” stated Finigan. “Band of Blue Assistant Director, Gary Stroupe leads this group with a very interesting show based on the game CLUE.”

Colleton County High School doors will open at 10:00 a.m. and the contest begins at 11:00 a.m. with awards scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Concessions will be available from the Band of Blue Booster Club. Tickets are: Children (Ages 5 & Under) Free, Youth (Ages 6 – 12) $8.00, and Adults (Ages 13 and Up) $10.00.
