Band of Blue takes top spot at state winter contest

Colleton County High School’s Band of Blue took first place in Saturday’s 2020 Carolina Winter Ensemble Association Premier South contest.
The statewide percussion competition was held at Lexington High School. To win first place, the Band of Blue performed a show entitled “Apollo.”
In addition to bringing home first place in the percussion contest, the local band’s Winter Guard also earned a ninth-place spot in the overall challenge. Additionally, Colleton County Middle School’s Cadet Guard came in fifth place. The Cadet Guard performed a show called “The Streets of London,” from a musical showcase called London Fog.
“This was the first contest of the season for the three Colleton County Winter Ensembles,” said Tom Finigan, director of the Band of Blue.
According to Finigan, all three of the band’s groups that comprise the winter ensemble will perform again on Feb. 15th at Colleton County High School.
A part of this winning Band of Blue team includes William Finigan, who also recently earned a third-chair spot in the 2020 S.C. Band Directors Association All-State Senior Band. Finigan took the third-chair ranking for his playing of the tuba. According to Tom Finigan, taking a top spot at the All-State level is the highest individual honor that a band member can earn.
“This is the fourth time that Finigan has earned All-State Honors,” said Tom Finigan. “A good number of Band of Blue members and middle school band members earned positions in the 2020 SCBDA Region Honor Bands,” he said. These accomplished band members include Shaleisha Funn, Syndey Howard; Logan Bailey; Bryan Ketchum; and Jermia Christian.
In addition to bringing back top scorer in the recent competition, the Band of Blue members is also fundraising for their upcoming performance in the 2020 Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade. This November performance will be televised and will be the first time that the Colleton County marching band has participated in this parade.
While in Philadelphia for this parade, Finigan said the band’s members would also tour New York City and Philadelphia.
Finigan is asking anyone who wants to donate to the band for this trip to contact Band of Blue Booster Club President Randy Ballew or make a donation to the band through their account at Bank of the Lowcountry.
