Kristina Rheam is an adorable seven year old girl that just happens to have a huge heart and a creative vision. Add that all together and what do you get? Well, although tightly under wraps still, it seems you get a children’s book about cancer, written from the seven-year-old perspective.

Rheam, a home-schooled first grader in the South Carolina Virtual Charter School, became curious about the disease that was affecting so many people she knew. So what does a seven year old do best? Ask questions! In conversations with her mother, Elizabeth, about finding cures for the disease and about the battles of local residents like Sarah Cole and Paula Jacques, she became curious about how she could help. “I told her all we can do is pray and find a way to donate to help find a cure faster,” said her mom, Lizzie. “We were on our way to buy Relay for Life shirts from Paula Jacques, when she said she wanted to do something as well.”

It didn’t take young, creative Kristina long to decide that she was going to write a book. Over the next few days, she would work tirelessly to put her ideas down and the end result was “Super Kitty VS the Cancer Bugs.” The plot of Kristina’s book revolves around a kitten, who turns into a super hero, and helps fight off the nasty, mean cancer bugs when they attack individuals.

According to her mom, Elizabeth, the first book is completely finished, and illustrated, and is awaiting publication. Kristina hasn’t been idle in the meantime; as she already has ideas for a series depending on how this one is received. She is very excited to see her book in print. Kristina is giving 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the first book to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

In a fundraising effort to publish the book, which costs around $750, Kristina and her parents are holding a BBQ Chicken Dinner fundraiser. The event will be held on Sunday, April 19th from Noon-3:00 p.m. at Welch Creek Civic Center, located at 3323 Sidneys Road. Presale tickets are $8.00 until Wednesday, April 15th and will be available at the door for $10.00. Plates will feature BBQ chicken, green beans, rice, and bread. They will also be holding a bake sale, face painting, silent auction, and more during the event. The band Stainless Glass will be performing. To order tickets, contact Elizabeth Rheam at 843-635-2351 or email [email protected].
