Walk A Mile In Her Shoes®

On Saturday November 3, 2018 the Walterboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Hopeful Horizons are partnering together to sponsor Walk A Mile in Her Shoes®, to bring about awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault. The event will be held from 9:00-11:30am, registration begins at 9:00am and the walk will begin at 9:45a.m. in the Walterboro City Parking Lot located at 306 E. Washington St. “We invite everyone to participate, I especially want to challenge public officials, law-enforcement and business owners to register a team and walk,” said Robin Wright, event co-chair. “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by domestic violence or sexual assault and if you do this is an opportunity to come out and support these victims in solidary,” says Wright.
Walk A Mile in Her Shoes® is a fundraiser to support survivors of domestic and sexual violence in our community. Men and boys wear heels and platform shoes for the walk to get a sense of what survivors experience when navigating the legal and medical systems after an assault as they deal with personal trauma resulting from the assault. Women and children participate as well and can register to walk in teams or as individuals. Proceeds from this event will be donated to Hopeful Horizons, a children’s advocacy, domestic violence and rape center that serves the Lowcountry.
The Attorney General’s office noted that more than 36,000 victims report a domestic violence incident to law enforcement statewide annually. One in 4 women have been the victims of severe physical violence, while 1 in 7 men have experienced the same. According to the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in South Carolina, the femicide rate (in which a woman is murdered by a man) is often over twice the national average. In 2014, the state of South Carolina had the highest number of women killed by men and has been in the top ten states EVERY year for the past twenty years according to the Violence Policy Center and in a 2017 report South Carolina ranked 5th.
National sexual assault statistics are just as scary. There is estimated to be 300,170 victims of rape and sexual assault each year, or 1 every 107 seconds according to the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Statistics. The Center for Disease Control report that 18 million women and 3 million men are survivors of sexual violence, estimating that 1 in 5 women and 1-71 men have been the victim of attempted or completed rape during their lifetime. South Carolina’s rape rate has exceeded the national rate since 1982 (Crime in South Carolina).
Men and boys, grab a pair of red heels and come walk alongside women and girls at Walk A Mile in Her Shoes®. The Walterboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Hope Horizons wants everyone to stand up and walk with them against domestic violence and sexual assault. Walkers will leave the city parking lot onto Hampton St. (towards the Courthouse), turn on Walter St. and proceed to Main St. ending at the city waterfall.
