Teaching means something different and special to every teacher. For Forest Hills Elementary teacher Amy Hilton, teaching means making a real difference in the lives of each student who walks through her door. Hilton graduated from the University of South Carolina-Aiken with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She also received her Master’s degree in Curriculum Instruction from Ashford University. Hilton has been teaching for 11 years, 9 of which have been in Colleton County. Hilton decided to become a teacher because, “I realized that I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and I thought teaching was the perfect opportunity to do that and I love children,” Hilton said. Hilton has a daughter, who is a Senior at Colleton County High School and for her teaching in the same district her daughter attends school has been rewarding. “I can be with her, spend time with her, and go to events with her,” Hilton said, “I can not only enjoy my job but my time with my daughter as well. I don’t have to miss out on the things in her life.” As for Hilton, the moment in teaching that makes it worthwhile for her is, “Knowing that I am able to impact the lives of our future, there’s nothing more rewarding than that.”
