Teacher Spotlight

Dana Garrett
School: Black Street Early Childhood Center
Position: 4K Teacher
Number of Years Educating: 6 years

For 4K Teacher, Dana Garrett, teaching was more than just a calling, it was something she felt she inherited, “I feel like it’s in my blood, it’s what I’m suppose to do. I didn’t really choose it, it chose me.” Garrett, a Colleton County native and graduate, left Walterboro in 2004 for higher education and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from South Carolina State University in 2009. Garrett began her teaching career in Colleton County at Hendersonville Elementary School where she taught 1st grade for four years. She transferred to Black Street Early Childhood Center last year so this is her second year as a 4K teacher. Being an educator in Colleton County, was always a goal for Garrett, “I always said that I was going to come back home. If the opportunity ever presented itself, I knew I wanted to help my community first.” That is exactly what Garrett has done for the past six years and will continue to do. Garrett’s favorite thing about being an educator is watching the children grow and develop, something her educators also have done with her. “Watching the kids grow, either academically or individually is my favorite part,” Garrett said, “Now when I see students I had in the past and their family thanks you or the kids you the biggest hugs, that what lets me know I’ve served my purpose.”
