Smooth things

We live in a day that people do not like to be told what they have to do. We want life our way! But life is more than a hamburger at Burger King. The time has come that people are tired of hearing the plain old gospel. People desire new teachings and something pleasing but that something is not the old- fashioned Gospel. This speaks very powerfully to the modern church where smooth talking preachers tell us that nothing but great things are going to happen all the time and we will have nothing but health and wealth in our life. They try to convince us that we will never suffer a fiery dart or a stormy trial. If we do then its because we didn’t say the magic words or buy their CDs.

In Isaiah 30, the prophet speaks about how people only want to hear smooth things. The people were in their comfort zone and they didn’t want to leave it. What are smooth things? Smooth things are those things that make us feel good. Chocolate tastes good but is not good for you if that’s all you eat! They were really crying for Isaiah to tell them good things whether it was true or not. If they could control the messenger then they could control the message.

Smooth things point to nothing but grace, but not a word about sin or repentance. If we focus only on faith or love but do not say a word about dedication or obedience then we miss the full Gospel. Smooth things are popular things because they don’t convict us to change. They don’t challenge us to deny ourselves and pick up the cross and follow Christ. There is a reason Christ calls our road a narrow one. Smooth things are popular things but dangerous things!
