Say “YES” to one-cent sales tax referendum

from the editor artWe should not allow our frustration to say “No” to everything on the upcoming Nov. 4th general election ballot.

Colleton County voters are soon facing a lot of tough decisions. There are multiple candidates running, along with three local referendums on the ballot. One of those referendums deserves a very definite and clear “Yes” vote from each us: as good stewards of our community, we should all say yes to the additional one-cent sales tax.

Without the implementation of this 8-year, one-cent sales tax, we can almost hear the hopes of our county’s progression turning into air. This one-cent sales tax – which will be paid in our stores by tourists and locals alike – will generate an estimated $32 million pool of cash, which will completely fund a list of countywide projects. These include upgrading well pumps and generators for our rural residents in Lodge, Smoaks, and Williams; a customer service building for the county so people can more conveniently and safely pay their taxes; a new water line in downtown Walterboro; renovating the Hampton Street Auditorium preserving it as a historical landmark; expanding our recreational facilities for our children; contributing to the Edisto Beach renourishment project; and building a new law enforcement complex for the entire county. The list of projects is a long one, and they affect almost all areas of our county.

Without the funds generated immediately from the one-cent sales tax, there is no timeline or feasible possibility of when all of these projects will be funded, if at all. The time to put our vision into a reality is now.

We do not believe in saying “yes” to everything. Other items on the ballot may or may not warrant a favorable reaction from our voters: this, however, does.

No matter who you vote to put into office, what you decide to do about the alcohol sales on Sunday or the funding of yet another school district wish list; we do ask that you say “YES” to the additional one-cent sales tax. It is our chance to help our county become as great as we all deserve.
