Representative donates fans to senior citizens

(Left to Right) Executive Director of the Bamberg County Office of Aging Kay Clary, Director of the Barnwell County Office of Aging, Barnwell County Office of Aging Director Emmy Lou Brown, Representative Bakari Sellers, and Colleton County Council of Aging Executive Director Everlena Brown.

State Representative Bakari Sellers today stepped forward to help senior citizens stay safe and cool this summer by personally donating 60 fans to senior citizens living within his district, which includes limited areas of Colleton County. Sellers handed out the fans at the Bamberg County Office on Aging, and they are to be distributed to senior citizens in Bamberg, Barnwell, and Colleton Counties.

Executive Director of the Colleton County Council on Aging Everlena Brown said Thursday that 20 fans were picked up for senior citizens in Lodge, Hendersonville, and the west side of I-95 in the Walterboro area. Colleton County Voter Registration Director Eric Campbell noted, however, that 10,266 registered voters live within Seller’s legislative district.

The fans will be distributed to senior citizens throughout Bamberg, Barnwell, and Colleton Counties who have been identified as being at significant risk for heat-related illness and/or death by the Offices of Aging within the three counties.

“For a senior citizen who has no air conditioning and no escape from triple digit temperatures, the heat can go from uncomfortable to deadly in minutes,” said Rep. Sellers. “People need to understand that this is a real danger and it’s our job to do everything we can to help.”

Local senior residents who think they live within Sellers’ district and need a fan for cooling purposes should contact the Colleton Council of Aging at 549-7642.
