Padgett Elected to CEC Board

Vehicles filled the parking lots of Coastal Electric Cooperative in Walterboro on Saturday, October 7th as individuals gathered to vote for the District 9 Board of Trustees seat. The seat was previously held by Elbert Sweat, who also served as the board’s treasurer. The election to fill this seat was held at Coastal Electric Coop, with candidates Ian Padgett and Timmy Benton running to represent District 9.

Individuals who receive Coastal Electric services are divided into nine service districts. Each of these districts are represented by elected individuals to serve on behalf of all of the Coastal Electric members. Each elected District Trustee serves for a term of three years and meets each month with other trustees to make executive decisions on interest of the members.

According to the Coastal Electric Coop Board of Trustee Web site, the current Coastal Electric Board of Trustee’s include: District 1- LaVern Polk; District 2- Jamie Bunton; District 3-Leon Bryan; District 4- Jamey Copeland; District 5- Jerry Crosby; District 6- Judy Reeves; District 7- Danny Lyons and District 8- Harold Rhodes, Jr. Incumbent District 9 candidate Elbert Sweat’s term has expired, marking the need for the election.

The position of Chairman is currently held by District 1 Trustee Polk, with Vice Chairman being held District 7 Trustee Lyons. Secretary belongs to District 5 Trustee Crosby and the treasurer is District 9 Trustee Sweat.

The October 7th election was held during the 77th annual Coastal Electric Cooperative Meeting. Once voting was concluded by late morning, Colleton County native and local business owner Ian Padgett was voted in as the new District 9 Trustee. Padgett will serve in the District 9 Trustee seat for three years when, if he chooses, may run again to continue his tenure on the Board of Trustees.
