New Christian afterschool program is in Colleton County

A new Christian after-school program is coming to Colleton County.
The Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) program is set to begin in three area elementary schools, to have the program in each school in Colleton County by the spring of 2020.
The CEF program is an international program that began in 1937. It is currently in more than 200 countries worldwide. The program uses volunteers from churches in each local area to teach the certified program and to care for children after school until they are picked up by their parents. It is supported financially through private donors and fundraising events.
“The same clubs that are in Beaufort and Jasper counties are being taught the same curriculum in Japan and Honduras,” said Mark Mansell, a spokesman for the CEF of the Lowcountry. The CEF of the Lowcountry is a chapter of the overall Child Evangelism Fellowship program that encompasses Beaufort and Jasper counties. This is the chapter that is launching the new program in Colleton County.
According to Mansell, he has already met with Colleton County School District Superintendent Dr. Franklin Foster, who “gave his blessing” to begin the CEF program in local schools.
Mansell said on Monday he has also already met with several area churches, who have agreed to support the program through volunteers. These volunteers will go through mandatory background checks for both the school district and CEF and will then be trained in the program’s curriculum and standards said, Mansell.
The program will first be launched at Hendersonville Elementary School, Forest Hills Elementary School, and at Northside Elementary. “We will start immediately with these schools, and we have volunteers in place for these schools,” said Mansell. “The goal is to have the program in every school in Colleton County, and we are continuing to market to the other areas.
“Everybody has been wonderful to us in every way,” he said.
Colleton County School District just started its own and first after-school program at the beginning of this school year. Parents who choose to use this program must pay for their children to attend.
Parents must sign their child up to attend the program. To sign up, or for more information, go to the group’s Web site, at www.cef-lowcountry.com.
