June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month. This national food holiday was created to encourage everyone to add more fruits and vegetables into their daily diet. Now that growing season in full swing, this is the perfect time to get fresh fruits and vegetables. This is one of the best times of the year to take advantage of what nature has to offer and it’s much easier to find local fresh produces in the summer months. June is also a great time to start visiting your local farmers market. During June and through the summer, you can often find lots of pop-up roadside farmers stands with local farmers selling fresh fruits and vegetables straight out of their gardens.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are not only delicious- but they also offer many beneficial nutrients that our bodies require such as vitamins, potassium, calcium, fiber and are low in calories. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables are important to promote good health and healthy nutrient. Among other health benefits, it can also help manage obesity, weight control, and disease prevention. Researchers have found that certain fruits and vegetables have health properties to help prevent certain diseases such cancer, diabetes and other illness. A diet filled with fresh fruits and vegetables can also help improve your skin, nails, hair and overall youthful appearance.
Although June marks National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet and should be eaten year-round for good health. In the U.S., we eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables throughout the year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that most adults eat at least three cups of fruits and vegetables per day. There are many ways to add them to your diet, like chopping them up into your pasta sauce, soups, grilling vegetable skewers on the barbecue, or blending vegetables and fruits together into a nutritious smoothie or for a tasty frozen treat. You can also eat certain fruits and veggies raw spread with peanut butter or hummus for a nutritious snack.
June is also a great month to plant a garden with your kids. Planting a garden is a great summer project to do with children to teach them how to grow and eat healthy fresh fruits and vegetables.
