Murdaugh receives The Order of the Palmetto

Lifelong attorney and area community activist Randolph Murdaugh, III has received The Order of the Palmetto.
The Order of the Palmetto is the highest honor given by the State of South Carolina to a civilian resident.
Murdaugh received the award in front of dozens of residents from Colleton, Hampton and Allendale counties during a presentation on Sept. 20th. That public presentation occurred on the lawn of the Hampton County Courthouse, a place where Murdaugh has spent the majority of his criminal law career.
He is the son of former Solicitor and Hampton County attorney, Buster Murdaugh, and is the third-generation attorney in the Murdaugh family to serve as solicitor of the Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. This circuit is comprised of Colleton, Allendale, Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties.
Murdaugh is still active with the solicitor’s office and is also a private attorney in a family-owned firm in Hampton County called Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick (PMPED). This firm was created by the Murdaugh family in 1910.
The Varnville native graduated from Wade Hampton High School in 1957 and then attended the University of South Carolina and consequently the USC School of Law.
After graduating from law school in 1964, he worked for his father’s law Hampton-based firm, then called Murdaugh, Eltzroth and Peters.
In 1986, Buster Murdaugh, who was the then sitting solicitor of the Fourteenth Circuit, announced that he would not seek re-election. Conseqeuntly, in 1987, Randolph Murdaugh took his first win the election for solicitor. Because of his win, the Murdaugh family created a legacy of having served as chief prosecutor in the Fourteenth Circuit for 87 years, creating a national record for one family having served in this position for the longest period of time in the United States.
Randolph Murdaugh then served as solicitor until 2006. During that time frame, he prosecuted more than 200 murder cases.
As a private attorney in his own firm, Murdaugh “successfully represented hudnreds of injured railroad workers” in federal claims filed across South Carolina, as stated by leaders in his law firm.
Murdaugh still operates as a consulting solicitor to the current incumbent, Solicitor Duffie Stone. He is also still active with this private law firm, and serves on multiple national and state prosecutorial agencies.
The Order of the Palmetto is given by an actively-elected South Carolina Governor to a civilian who has shown “contributions and friendship to the State of South Carolina and her people,” as stated on the plaque. Since the award was created 40 years ago, 3,500 people have received the award.
