Lady Cougars Start Season 1-1

The Lady Cougars hit the court on Friday December 1st against Ridgeland High School. This was the season opening game for the Lady Cougars 2017-2018 season. The first game of the season was not a victory for the Lady Cougars, as Ridgeland High defeated the Cougars with a final score of 29-39. Although the gap of defeat was not large, the Lady Cougars continue to learn how to work as a team and how to overcome new obstacles. According to Coach Chisolm, “Friday night was not our best performance, we have to learn how to play through adversity. This was an eye opener for us as coaches to challenge our girls more in practice.” During the game, Scha’Mari Stephens lead the Lady Cougars in points with a total of 10 points scored during the game. Following Stephens was Omari Kirkland with 8pts, Zy’Aire Johnson with 4pts, Michele’ Holmes with 3pts, Kari Edwards with 2pts, Jadaya Hugie with 1pt, and Tiffany North with1pt. There was little rest for the Lady Cougars, as they hit the courts on Saturday night as well, where they faced Wade Hampton High School. The Lady Cougars worked together to pull out a win for the night with a final score of 38-34. “Our game Saturday came down to the team with the most eager and that was us,” Coach Chisolm said, “In spite of us being undisciplined defensively, offensively in spurts and not making free-throws our young ladies did not give up. It came down to the last 3:00 minutes of the game (25-27) when Edwards and Holmes knocked down a 3 pointer that gave us an advantage 27-33. And from there we managed to stay poised and keep the lead to win.” This win was largely in part to Stephens, who again led the Lady Cougars in points, with a total of 22 points scored. Stephens is leading the board for most points in a game so far this season. Other key players during the game were Omari Kirkland with 4pts, Zy’Aire Johnson with 4pts,
Kari Edwards with 3pts, Michele’ Holmes with 3pts, and Tiffany North with 2pts. According to Head Coach Perry Smalls, he and his coaching staff are “Still looking for a true post player who’s ready to work everyday, we have underclassmen’s that we do not want to be put under a lot of pressure. As a team have to get better defensively but Friday night we just got out worked.” The Lady Cougars have two home games this week, the first will be on Friday December 8th at 6:00pm, where they will face Bamberg High School and on Saturday December 9th at 6:30pm, they will face Wade Hampton High School.
