Junior Shaggers to take stage at Shag Fest

This year’s Edisto Music and Shag Festival will feature the Shagtime 2 and the Wee Baby Blues shaggers, two junior-shagging teams whose shaggers come from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
The groups have 30 members who are coming to the local festival, which is set to be held on Sept. 1, 2, and 3. The event is the 8th annual shag festival and it is held at Bay Creek, next to the marina.
The performance by the Junior Shaggers at this year’s festival is highly anticipated.
In May, the award-winning team won Entertainers of the Weekend at the U.S.A. Grand National Dance Championship in Atlanta, Ga. In July, the same team entertained young patients at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, N.C. During Thanksgiving of last year, the team traveled to Burbank, California for the U.S. Open Swing Dance Championships, where they placed third among teens and teams from across the nation.
This year’s routine will pay tribute to the shag dance, which is the official state dance for South Carolina. The team’s costumes will set the tone for a “blast from the past,” said Shari Huiett, a parent, and supporter of the Junior Shaggers. Huiett also writes marketing materials for the group.

“The team will celebrate the early days of shag dancing,” she said.
According to Hueitt, the team this year will perform for its third consecutive year at the Edisto Shag Festival. “What an honor for our kids,” she said.
In addition to performances by these shaggers, the local shag festival this year is also featuring more than 30 vendors, which include arts, crafts and food vendors. The festival requires daily admission rates: children under the age of 12 will be admitted daily for free.
The festival is also featuring nightly entertainment. On Friday, DJ Jim Bowers is performing from noon to 7 p.m., followed by the Band of OZ at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, DJ Jim Bowers will perform again from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., followed by Vinyl Daze from 1 to 4 p.m. and The Entertainers from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
On Sunday, DJ Jim Bowers will perform from noon to 1 p.m., with the Shag Doctorz from 1 to 4 p.m. The Shem Creek Boogie Band is going to perform on that Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
