Hyde Park neighborhood participates in National Night Out

Residents enjoy a previous crime-watch related event.

The Hyde Park Neighborhood Watch will celebrate the 29th Annual National Night Out Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. with a block party and neighborhood walk. Residents of this neighborhood are invited and also urged to attend. Many neighborhoods throughout the country will be hosting a variety of special events, such as block parties, parades, visits from law enforcement officials, flashlight walks, youth activities, and anti-crime rallies.

What is National Night Out? It’s America’s Night Out Against Crime! National Night Out” (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2012.

Nationally, residents in neighborhoods across the nation are asked to lock the doors of their residences, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with both neighbors and law enforcement officials.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting crime.

NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits your community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night. For further information, contact Cheryl Murdaugh at 538-5686.
