Hundreds of kids get free bookbags, school supplies

Hundreds of free book bags filled with school supplies were handed out to parents of Colleton County kids during Saturday’s annual Back to School Bash.
The event is held each year as a ramp-up for the back-to-school year. It features live music, food distribution, the giving away of school supplies and books, community information for parents, and even activities for kids.
Sponsored by the Colleton County School District, the event is free and is open to any parent of a student who attends a Colleton County school.
On Saturday, approximately 870 book bags were distributed to parents during the four-hour event. Each book bag was stuffed with school supplies, according to Sean Gruber, spokesman for the Colleton County School District.
In addition to the giving away of free school supplies, about 23 vendors from the Colleton community attended the event. These vendors, which include companies, non-profit organizations and agencies and offices from all over the county, also handed out school supplies and other items, including pencils, toothbrushes, hygiene items, food, books and more.
In addition to the vendors, representatives from each of the district’s eight schools were present. These representatives answered questions about the coming school year.
The Walterboro Police Department also attended the event, handing out safety information to parents. The WPD also had officers on site to speak with parents and students as part of their ongoing community outreach efforts.
According to Gruber, Colleton County School District Superintendent Dr. Franklin Foster says he is “very happy” to see the enthusiasm shown by those parents and students who attended the Saturday back-to-school event.
Colleton County schools begin the 2019-2020 school year on August 19th.
“I am excited that so many members of our community came out to the Back to School Bash. It was nice to see the excitement of the students and parents that attended,” Foster said, in a written statement. “We really appreciate the support of our community partners that made this event possible as we kick off the 2019-2020 school year.”
