“Heroes” preparing to shop with Colleton’s needy children

Area police officers and firefighter-paramedics are about to transform into Santa Claus, as they prepare for the annual shopping event that benefits local children who are in need.
“Shopping with Santa’s Heroes” is held each year. The idea partners area police officers, law enforcement officers, and firefighter-paramedics with children who are in need. The groups then go to Wal-Mart, where the officers and firefighters buy gifts for those children.
The entire event is organized by the Walterboro Police Department, which raises funds throughout the year to buy the children’s gifts. Other participating agencies – including S.C. Highway Patrol, the Walterboro Fire Department, Colleton County Fire-Rescue and the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office – also contribute financially to the cause.
Wal-Mart also gives a discount to the clothes and toys bought for the children.
“It is one of the most rewarding moments we do each year,” said Barry McRoy, director and chief of Colleton County Fire-Rescue. Each year, the CCFR sends anywhere from 18-25 firefighters and paramedics to help the children shop and to participate in buying the gifts. McRoy says most of the participating firemen also donate to the charitable shopping spree.
“For me, and for the firefighters and paramedics who attend, it is very touching,” he said.
To date, the Walterboro Police Department and its officers have raised $3,450: all of this money will be used to buy gifts for the children during this event.
According to information provided by the WPD, there were about 30 first responders and officers from the Walterboro Police Department who participated in the 2018 shopping spree. That number is expected to increase this year.
This year, the police department is also expecting about 20 children to be chosen to participate in “Shopping with Santa’s Heroes.”
Following the early-morning shopping spree, the children and the volunteers from the law enforcement community are treated to a breakfast at Burger King in Walterboro.
In all, about 25 children are chosen each year to participate in the shopping event. Officials select them at the Colleton County Department of Social Services (DSS).
The Shopping with Santa’s Heroes event is being held on Dec. 7th. It is more than a decade old, with the law enforcement agencies and the county’s DSS agency working together to help Colleton’s neediest children have gifts for Christmas.
Anyone who wants to contribute to the cause can call the Walterboro Police Department at 843-549-1811.
