Hawaii Five-0 featuring local talent

By Heather Walters

A Colleton man is making a big splash on the Hawaii-based series, Hawaii Five-0.
Ron Riles, 54, just finished filming the 80th episode of the CBS television show. With the show on a temporary spring break before the next season starts filming in July, Riles is back in Colleton County, living in Walterboro and working on his property in Mashawville.
“When I’m not filming, I call Walterboro home,” he said.
While working as an actor on the show, he is a stand-in and photo-double for the show’s co-stars. He also plays a main character role of Steve MaGarrett, an officer on the show. “As an actor, I got my second opportunity to audition for a small co-starring role on the show in February,” he said. “I’m making progress. I have had speaking parts in a few small independent film projects filmed last year. I am usually cast as an FBI agent or police officer.”

Riles started his acting career after finishing his first career as a member of the U.S. Military. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years before retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant. After leaving the Air Force, he moved to Hawaii and saw that the television show was advertising for extras. He first became an extra for the show and was then cast in a reoccurring role. His acting career with the show has grown from there, he said.
“Acting is something I just always wanted to do,” he said, about his choice to start a new career after the military. “In the future, everything is focused on my acting and I’m going to continue to move forward.”
Riles grew up on James Island and is a graduate of the former Ft. Johnson High School. His mother, however, was a Walterboro native and she and his father moved back to Colleton County in the early 1990s.
“This is my home, and I’m here at least twice a year in between filming,” he said. “I enjoy living here, and I want people to know you can have a full life.”
In addition to working on Hawaii Five-0, Riles is also working on several independent films, one of which just completed filming in November of 2016. One of those films, “World Buffet,” is currently in post-production. He is also a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
