Great American Cleanup Kickoff set for March 16

The Keep Colleton Beautiful 2013 Great American Cleanup’s Kick-off event is set for Saturday, March 16.

The event will be held at the Saints Center Ministries Church at Robertson Boulevard at Hampton Street from 9:30 p.m.-12:30 p.m., followed by a cookout.

The actual cleanup will occur from March 1-May 31. The number of bags or truckloads of materials collected (including tires, furniture, etc.) will be tallied. The road names and areas cleaned, along with the approximate number of miles traveled, should also be included. Recycling-related materials, such as glass, aluminum, and plastic, should be bagged separately.

“We want this year to be an even better success than last. Churches, schools, civic groups, public and private business and individuals may clean up litter from our streets, roads and highways to help make Colleton County a cleaner place to live,” said event organizer Jean Harrigal. “Please use your e-mails, newsletters and other tools to spread the word.”

Litter may be picked up in front of your homes, churches, businesses, or along the roads in the Colleton County area. Residents are encouraged to make these clean-ups fun with contests and/or cookouts. Litter can be taken to any Colleton County Convenience/Recycling Center or disposed in any other proper manner. Bags may also be left to be picked up by S.C. Department of Transportation (538-8031).

“Please recycle as much plastic, glass and aluminum that you can. These can all be recycled at the convenience center on the Robertson by-pass. Cardboard, newspapers and aluminum may be recycled at other county convenience centers. Please also recycle your old computers, printers, and other such items at these sites,” Harrigal said.
