Good crowd attends Chili Bowl

A crowd of about 100 people enjoyed a variety of chili recipes and steamed oysters Thursday evening from 5-8 p.m. at the Chili Bowl and Oyster Roast at the Colleton Museum and Farmers Market.

Eight teams competed in the chili cook-off; however, at the end, only one winner came out on top. Lynn Tanner, owner of Walterboro Rental, and Billy Ackerman, owner of Ackerman Landscaping took the first place honor.

All proceeds from the event went to benefit the South Carolina Artisans Center and the upcoming Downtown Walterboro Criterium. On Friday, Lynn said, “We got a plaque and $50 for the win, but we donated the money back so it would benefit the Artisans Center and Criterium,” Lynn said.

Lynn said he cooked the chili for seven hours, and then simmered the concoction overnight. The chili was then cooled, stored, and reheated on the evening of the competition.

Lynn noted he started out with a whole rib-eye loin, seared it, and then cut it up to put the meat into the pot. “I then used fresh jalapeno peppers, crushed tomatoes, Vidalia onions, kidney beans, salt, black and red pepper, combined with a couple of secret ingredients to put it all together,” Lynn said.
