The Feathered Nest Florist and Gifts, located at 143 South Memorial at the corner of Carn Street (across from first Baptist Church), opened their door for business Monday.

Veteran florist Sheryl Bonebrake owns the floral shop. Over the course of her life, Sheryl has become a world traveler. She met her husband, Jeff, while he was in the United States Navy. He was one of several crewmembers serving aboard a submarine while serving in the United States Navy. Originally stationed in California, the couple later moved to Kansas, and then moved to South Carolina, where he began civilian work as an electrician.

“Jeff’s company wanted him centrally located between Hilton Head and Charleston, and we’ve been living here in Walterboro for the past 33 years.” During the mid 1990’s, Sheryl worked with flowers and plants for six years at the Ladybug Florist within old Piggly Wiggly that was located in the Belk’s Plaza on Bells Highway.

Sheryl also worked at Floral Designs by Shirley on Bells Hwy. “I worked with Lonnie and Shirley Beach. “I always had a good time when working there. Shirley could always make me laugh… sometimes we could just look at each other and start laughing.”

Sheryl said that eventually Shirley began not to feel well. She went to the doctor, and, when she returned, she reported that the news was bad. She had found that she had cancer.

Sheryl said that she and Shirley kept working at the shop, with her husband, Lonnie, making floral deliveries, as her illness progressed. “Shirley was concerned about what would happen to her customers, and kind of urged me to keep the business going, and I gave this a lot of thought. I had the experience so, after talking things over with my husband, we bought out all of her inventory.”

Sheryl noted that, at The Feathered Nest, the customer service and product quality is of the same caliber as it was at Floral Designs by Shirley. She added she gladly welcomes any of Shirley’s old customers to her place of business.

Sheryl’s shop will also specialize in nature-inspired gifts, including hand-made and hand-painted gift items. “My first love is painting, and I will be painting old-time Santa’s and offering them for sale,” Sheryl said. “We also try to carry American-made products, if at all possible. I think that this is really important.” Sheryl added she also plans to carry Christmas items on a year round basis.

For Valentine’s Day, Sheryl will be carrying items, such as roses, a variety of balloons, and candy-related items along with flowers, as well as other gifts.
