Fight over car keys leads to shooting arrest

A man wanted by the Walterboro Police Department for a Sunday afternoon shooting was taken into custody on Monday during an unrelated domestic violence call.

Jermaine Silas White, 42, of Walterboro, is in custody at the Colleton County Detention Center. He is charged with attempted murder and other, unrelated domestic violence charges.

According to information released by the Walterboro Police Department and by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, officers were originally called to a shooting on Sunday afternoon that occurred in the 100-block of the Francis Street area in Walterboro. The July 15th shooting occurred in the middle of the day, around 3:40 p.m. According to WPD Spokeswoman Lt. Amye Stivender, officers responded to the 911-emergency call and found a 24-year-old white man laying in the road. That victim had been shot in the neck. Witnesses on the scene, along with the victim, who was conscious when officers arrived, identified White as the shooter. The victim was transported to an area hospital by Colleton County Fire-Rescue, while investigators with the police department secured the scene.

Local officers were actively searching for White from Sunday to Monday. Then, at about 2:50 p.m. on July 16th, the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office emergency dispatch center received a hang-up phone call from a house on Cleveland Street in Walterboro.

According to information provided by sheriff’s office Spokesman Lt. Tyger Benton, deputies soon learned that the call was in reference to an ongoing argument between a couple. The two were fighting over car keys, Benton said, when the argument turned physical.

Officers from both the police department and the sheriff’s office responded to the scene. There, they found White, who had barricaded himself in the house. He would also not allow his girlfriend to leave the house.

Law enforcement officers negotiated with White for about 40 minutes before he surrendered.

Benton says White is facing “multiple charges” related to the domestic dispute. The female victim in the case was taken to Colleton Medical Center for treatment: she sustained injuries from White during the argument, Benton said, in a written statement.

In addition to the charges that White is facing from the sheriff’s office, the Walterboro Police Department has also charged him with attempted murder for the Sunday shooting.

As of press deadline, the medical condition of the male shooting victim was not known.
