“This year’s festival will be bigger and better than ever,” – Bubba Trippe

The 2013 Colleton County Rice Festival will be a grand event this year. “This year’s festival will be bigger and better than ever,” said Rice Festival President Bubba Trippe. “We have a total of 100 booth spots, and all of them have been filled.” Trippe added that 25 crafters have already rented spaces.

Two events will precede the Rice Festival’s normal schedule, which prompted their printing early so that participants and readers would have prior knowledge in order to prepare for them.

–On Saturday, April 20, The Miss Rice Festival Pageant will be held at the Colleton Center on Hampton Street. “We really need girls from Walterboro to enter,” said Trippe. “We know there are plenty of pretty girls in Walterboro, and we haven’t had a winner from here in quite a few years.”

Division One, which includes Baby Miss, Mini Miss, and both master divisions (these categories are for babies and children up to six years old) are at 10 a.m., and candidates should be onstage at that time.

Division Two, which includes Little Miss, Young Miss, Teen, and Miss divisions (these classes include candidates from seven to 23 years old), will be on the same day at 2 p.m., and the candidates should be onstage at that time. Trippe noted the winners of the Teen and Miss Rice Festival will move on to the state competition. For further information, call Ann Drawdy at (843) 893-3984.

–The Taste of Walterboro will be on Tuesday, April 23, from 6-8 p.m. at the Colleton Museum and Farmers Market at 506 East Washington Street. Trippe said that food from many local restaurants and caterers will be available for sampling purposes. Tickets are $15 per person and $25 for couples. Tickets are available at Downtown Books and Espresso at 213 East Washington Street and the Walterboro-Colleton Chamber of Commerce at 109 Benson Street.
