Darien Campbell leads Savannah State Univ. to MEAC Baseball Title

Darien Campbell, former Cougar two-sport athlete really turned up his game as his Tigers of Savannah State University, in their 2nd year in the MEAC, entered the Mid- Eastern Atlantic Conference Tournament.

Campbell left his mark on each game as he went on a hitting streak, getting hits in each game. The Tigers made their way to the MEAC Championship game by defeating Maryland Eastern Shore, Norfolk State, and Coppin State.

These wins put the Tigers on a collision course with the Wildcats of Bethune Cookman, who had won 8 consecutive MEAC Baseball Titles, and 13 of the last 14.

The Tigers relied on pretty good pitching and excellent defense to take the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, with the score tied 0 – 0, Campbell came to the plate, the Tigers having 1 out and no runners on. Campbell hit the ball sharply, to continue his hitting streak, with a stand up double. Then Todd Hagen hit a single to move Campbell to third, a sacrifice fly to right from Peter Poole scored Campbell for the only run in the Championship game. Savannah State University took the win in the championship game by a score of 1-0 in10 innings. The Tigers earns the conference berth to the NCAA regionals.

Campbell also graduated cun laude in chemistry with a minor in math.
