CPA Youth Cheerleaders Shine on Game Nights

Friday night lights, can mean many different things to many people. If you have ever attended a Friday night football game for Colleton Preparatory Academy (CPA), one thing you can’t miss is their growing youth cheerleading program. The squad, previously referred to as the Wee Hawks, has grown over the years to now include the Tiny Hawks, Wee Hawks, and the Elementary Squad. Coaches Jordan Polk and Chancey Padgett, currently coach over 50 girls who perform at each home football game. At the end of the first quarter, the Tiny Hawks entertain the stands with cheers and a dance, “Tiny hawks favorite cheer is the Rumba,” Coach Polk said because they get to shake their bottoms. During half time the Wee Hawks and the Elementary Squad, perform cheers and a dance after the Varsity Squad performs. “I think it has gone really well, most of the girls that we have now we have had for a few years,” Coach Polk said, “They do a good job and remember the cheers really well.” Coach Polk said that on game day Fridays, “They get really excited,” especially when they see the Varsity Cheerleaders in their uniforms and the coaches in their shirts. Outside of the games, the youth cheerleading squad generally performs at one pep rally during the season. For Coach Polk, the greatest reward of for her as a coach is when her squads succeed, “I like watching them perform.” “I want to thank the parents and Varsity Cheerleaders,” Polk said. For Coach Polk, the squad’s success is greatly based on the input and help from the Varsity Cheerleaders, who help during practices and game time performance. Some of the Wee Hawks had a lot to say about why they love cheering so much, Hadley Harrison said her favorite part was, “The pom pom thing, cheering and when they pick me up!” As for Wee Hawk Hannah Murray, she said she likes doing the cheers on the ground, “Because I don’t like going in the air,” and Wee Hawk Kelsey Rizer summed it all up by saying, “I just like doing the cheers!”
