CPA Varsity Football starts out with a loss

The Colleton Prep War Hawks lost to Branchville High School Yellow Jackets Thursday night, 7 to 23.
The game was a defensive battle for most of the first half. The War Hawks had to punt on their first drive, but War Hawk Riley Smoak grabbed an interception on the Yellow Jackets first possession. The teams traded punts for the most of the first half. The War Hawks got on the board late in the second quarter on a one yard touchdown run by Jordan Crosby. The touchdown run was set up by a big third down reception by Gabe Barns. On the scoring drive, Drew Murdaugh had runs of seven, six and eight yards. Hunter Hudson also added a 15 yard run on the scoring possession. The Yellow Jackets was able to get the lead on their last possession of the half when they scored on a short run and a two point conversion for an 8 to 7 half time lead.
In the second half, the War Hawks couldn’t get anything going offensively as they were forced to punt all three possessions. The Yellow Jackets grabbed the lead 16 to 7 with a few minutes to go in the third quarter, then added a late touchdown to give them the 23 to 7 win.
War Hawks Head Varsity Football Coach Greg Langdale said, “I though offensively we just couldn’t get in rhythm. We made a lot of mistakes that we have got to correct on the offensive side of the ball. We have to quit hurting ourselves with penalties. Defensively, I thought we played well enough to win the game. We made a few fourth down plays that we would like to have back but overall we did a good job defensively. I was very proud of the effort our guys gave tonight.”
Gabe Barns broke his collarbone late in the game and will miss six to eight weeks. Coach Langdale added, “It is going to be very hard to try and replace Gabe. He is one of our hardest workers and leaders on the team. He is the type of player you can’t replace, you just have to get everyone to give a little more to try and make up for some of the loss.” Offense: Murdaugh had nine carries for 47 yards and four receptions for 30 yards and Crosby was seven of 18 passing for 58 yards, 11 carriers for 30 yards and a touchdown. Defense: Smaok had an interception on the first defensive series, Hudson had seven tackles and Jacob Breland had nine tackles.
The War Hawks will travel Friday night to face Hilton Head Prep Dolphins at 5:00pm. Come out and support these young guys has they look to bring home a win.
