Council talking cash in budget planning

City of Walterboro officials are preparing to adopt the city’s upcoming fiscal budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

Right now, the city’s operating budget is only a proposal, as Walterboro City Council has not yet taken any votes on the matter.

However, the proposed budget comes in at about $11.034 million, with nearly $7 million of this going into the city’s general fund.

This proposed budget does not include a property tax increase for Walterboro residents.

Under the proposed budget, residents’ millage rates will remain the same, at about 86.4.

There will also be no business license increase and no water and sewer rate increase in the coming year.

However, according to a proposed budget draft, there is a proposed sanitation rate increase, at $2 per billing cycles for all residents. For commercial bills, the proposed increase is 20 percent.

Also, under the proposed budget, there is no increase in pay listed for any of the city’s elected leaders, including the mayor. The city’s manager is also listed as remaining “status quo,” according to the verbiage in the proposed city budget.

Council may have to act on incoming health insurance premiums and state retirement contributions for employees, both of which are expected to increase. These increases are mandates that come down to municipalities from the state.

On a local level, city council is considering approving the purchase of two new police vehicles, which is a part of the Walterboro Police Department’s budget. Council may also approve the addition of another public defender for the city’s judicial department.

According to a proposed city budget draft, there may also be the purchase of a new residential sanitation truck for the city’s use.

Walterboro City Council is going to hold a budget workshop next week to discuss the city’s budget. No action has been taken by city leaders on this matter.
