Cougars Make a Come Back

The Colleton County varsity boys’ basketball team dominated the court Tuesday December 5th against Royal Live Oaks Academy with a final score of 75-25. The Cougars were recovering from two defeats last week against Ridgeland High School and Wade Hampton High School. According to Head Coach Smith, the Cougars were learning to adjust with new team mates and focus more on defense. “Our basketball team had a productive week after starting off slow the 1st week of the season,” Coach Smith said.
Seniors Tristian Nieves and Nyeem Green lead the Cougars during those two games last week, along with Juniors Devo006E Farmer and Javan Williams. During the game on Tuesday night, Sophomore Jeremiah Mosley lead the Cougars in points with a total of 9 points scored, followed by Seniors Tristan Nieves, Jerry Green, and Junior Shykem Chisolm who all scored 8 points during the game. During the first quarter the Cougars scored 31 points, giving them a 25 point lead heading into the second quarter where they continued to lead, adding 12 points in the second quarter, 17 points in the third quarter, and 15 points in the fourth quarter giving the Cougars a 50 point lead to finish the game.
On Saturday, December 9th, the Cougars faced Wade Hampton High School for the second week. Last week the Cougars played a hard but fell short during the first quarter allowing Wade Hampton to take the lead, which they were never able to regain. According to Coach during the game the team played well but the team was experiencing some growing pains and learning to consistently play together. “We had an opportunity to clean up some things offensively and defensively,” Coach Smith said, “Our goal this week was to hold our opponents under 50pts per game.” That strategy came together on Saturday night when the Cougars came back and started the first quarter on top with a 13 point lead but really dominated in the fourth quarter leaving the Cougars with a victory 72-37. Senior De’iajae Ferguson lead the Cougars in points with 16 points scored during the game. For the season, Senior Tristan Nieves is currently leading with an average of 11.6 points per game but is closely followed by Senior De’iajae Ferguson who averages 10.4 per game. With Nivens leading with 58 points for the season and Ferguson at 52 points, these Seniors are pushing hard this season to get their team to the top. “Our intensity picked up this week in practices,” Coach Smith said, “I informed our players that offensive performances come and go, but great defense will help you win ball games. We will continue to improve each day in order to be prepared for our region games.”
Before the Cougars leave for Winter break, the Cougars will face Royal Live Oaks Academy Tuesday, December 12th at home at 6:00pm. The Cougars will finish the week at Bamberg High School on Thursday December 15th at 6:00pm. The Cougars will also play in a Christmas Tournament at Woodland High School and Orangeburg Wilkinson High School, with dates and times TBA.
