Cougars Hit the Courts with Players to Watch

The Colleton County Varsity boys basketball team, played on Friday December 1st against Ridgeland High School, where the Cougars were defeated 80-67. The Cougars ended the first quarter with a 20-23 score. They held strong during the second and third quarters, but fell short during the fourth quarter when Ridgeland took a 12 point lead. According to Head Coach Jacob Smith, “We lost a very physical game to Ridgeland. We played well at times but we need to work more on being more consistent on defense and offense.” Leading the Cougars that night in points was Senior Tristian Nieves, who scored 15 points for the Cougars, followed by Senior De’iajae Ferguson who scored 14 points. Junior Javon Williams came in third with 10 points scored during the game. The Cougars did not have a day to rest as they faced Wade Hampton High School on Saturday night, where they were again defeated with a final score of 54-48. The Cougars ended the first quarter behind but fought hard during the second and third quarter to regain their ground but unfortunately were unable to pull ahead. Senior Nyeem Green lead the Cougars that night with 17 points scored during the game, with Senior Tristan Nieves and Junior Devon Farmer tied in second with 8 points scored. “The game was back in forth the majority of the night,” Coach Smith said, “We received a lot of great support from the community that traveled. We played well at times, but we are still inconsistent. Our team returned a lot of players from last year, but we are also going through the growing pains of learning how to play with new teammates. I stressed to our players the importance of being consistent and working everyday to get better.” With several new teammates, the Cougars are learning to work together and Coach Smith has goals for this season. “Over the last 2 games we shot free-throws poorly and will be working on improving in that area this week,” Coach Smith said, “Our goal this season is to put more focus on defense. We feel in order to beat the better teams in the state you must be able to stop people from scoring.” This week the Cougars will face Royal Live Oaks Academy on Tuesday December 5th and play two home games, one Friday December 8th against Bamberg High School and Saturday December 9th against Wade Hampton High School.
