Cougars Compete in Orangeburg Sweet 16 Tournament

The Colleton County Cougars have not had a chance to rest over the Christmas break as they have competed in two tournaments. The first tournament was the Woodland Christmas Tournament, which was held before Christmas break where the Cougars started their first game against First Baptist on Wednesday December 20th. The Cougars fell short by only two points during that game with a final score of 81-79. The Cougars were led that night in points by Senior Tristan Nieves who scored a total of 27 points during the game. The next night the Cougars faced St. John’s and they were able to redeem themselves as they defeated St. John’s with a final score of 70-48. Senior Jerry Green had his best game to date as he led the Cougars in points and scored 20 points during the game. The Cougars ended the Christmas Tournament on Friday December 22nd against Augusta Christian High School, where the Cougars again showed up and defeated their opponents. The Cougars were able to maintain a healthy lead during that game and came out with a final score of 71-54 with Senior De’iajae Ferguson leading in points during the game.

On Wednesday December 27th, the Cougars headed to the Orangeburg Sweet 16 Tournament where they started the tournament off against Bethune-Bowman where the Cougars started the first quarter behind but were able to regain their footing in the fourth quarter where the Cougars were able to get ahead in points ultimately scoring a victory. The Cougars final score for the game was 61-58 and were lead in points by Senior Nyeem Green who scored 23 points and 10 rebounds during the game, followed closely by Senior Tristian Nieves who scored 18 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assist, 4 steals, and a block during the game. Junior Javon Williams Jr also had a good game as he scored 10 points during the game with 3 rebounds, 3 assist, 6 steals and a block.

On Thursday December 28th, the Cougars faced Kingstree High School where they lead the scoreboard during the entire game. In the first quarter, the Cougars held a 19 point lead and continued to maintain their lead and ended the game with a final score of 68-54. The Cougars were lead in points by Ferguson who scored 23 points during the game and had 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal. Green again showed up and had major stats during the game including 12 points scored, 10 rebounds, and 3 assist. On Friday December 29th, the Cougars faced Orangeburg-Wilkinson, where they fell short during the first quarter and could not regain a lead during the game and were defeated 52-57. The Cougars were led in points during the game by Senior Tristian Nieves who scored 18 points during the game. This was the last game in the tournament and the Cougars will pick up their regular season games on Friday, January 5th against Ridgeland High School at home.
