Cougars come up short verses West Ashley

The Colleton County High School Band marched, the Chorus sang, and the excitement grew. Yes, it was Homecoming, so the candidates for Homecoming Queen also marched.

The stage was set for the Cougars to take their first victory of the season. Confidence was the only way to describe the young Cougar team. Even after giving up two points on a safety early in the game, the general consensus was that the Cougars would win this one.

As spectators watched the game, it was evident that these teams were pretty much evenly matched. It was tough luck the game would come down to which team would make the most mistakes. Turnovers and penalties occurred, and it turned out the Cougars made more of both. West Ashley got their first win of the season against the Cougars, by a score of 8 to 6.

The scoring seemed more like someone would see at a high school baseball game. West Ashley led 2 – 0 at the end of the first quarter. Early in the second, a 30-plus yard field goal by Stewart Bailey gave the Cougars a 3 – 2 lead.

The Wildcats next drive stalled, but a fake punt on fourth down gave them a first, which later led to a touchdown, and the Wildcats led by 8-3 at halftime.

In the third quarter, The Cougars were able to move the ball, but their drive stalled, and the teams went back and forth for several team possessions. Then, an interception by Ramone Hall and a run back to the Wildcat’s 26 yard line led to a 26-yard Cougar field goal by the Bailey, and score at this point was 8 for the Wildcats and 6 for the Cougars. The Cougars had opportunities, but just couldn’t get anything going late in the game. The Cougars fell with a final score 8-6.

The Cougars will travel to Stratford High Friday and return home next week to face Cane Bay. Make plans to come out and support the Cougars as they continue to look for their first win of the season.
