Cougar New Tech names Teacher of the Year

On August 19, 2013, the bell rang at Colleton County High School sounding the start of a new school year, but it also opened the doors to a new way of educating students in Colleton County with the grand opening of Cougar New Tech Entrepreneurial Academy.  Geography teacher, or facilitator as called in the New Tech world, Josh Cable could not even imagine that he would be named teacher of the year by the end of the school term.  Cable, a native of Pennsylvania, has been working at Colleton County High School DSC_0420 webfor five years.  This year he was responsible for teaching only students enrolled in the New Tech program.

Cable was visiting family in Beaufort while still a student at Penn State.  He decided to go to a job fair in Columbia, SC while he was visiting our state. It was here that he met the head of Colleton County School District’s Human Resources.  At the time, there was no position open.  However, Principal Cliff Warren decided to interview him because he had driven so far.  To his delight a position came open during the summer and he was offered the job.  He is married to Jessica who is also teaching at Cougar New Tech.  The couple is expecting their first child in August.

The three pillars of New Tech are trust, respect, and responsibility.  “Mr. Cable demonstrates all of this.  We trust him above all else to guide us in where we need to go.  Every day, he pays us with true respect, something that a lot of teachers often forget when with students, by treating every student equally and as a person, and we want to give him our respect.  Mr. Cable is responsible in every sense of the word.  We always know the he will be there to do what we need, never faltering”, said Mayme Medlock when asked about her teacher.  Students enjoy attending class with Cable.  He makes them feel relaxed and entertained while in his classroom.  Medlock also went on to say “We all knew when the award was being announced that Mr. Cable was going to be the recipient.  He is the culmination of what everyone dreams a teacher will be.  You trust him, you feel he treats every student of any circumstance equally, and you know he actually cares.”

Cable described winning the title of Teacher of the Year as “unexpected and a humbling experience.”  He had no idea he would be picked for this honor as says “we have so many talented and dedicated teachers who are a part of this school.”  Cable looks forward to the future of Cougar New Tech Entrepreneurial Academy and hopes this school stays around Colleton County for many years to come.
