City buys downtown building

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAThe City of Walterboro has purchased the former Glover Motor Company to become the Discovery Center for the City’s Wildlife Sanctuary the property is located at in front of the Colleton County Courthouse, at the end of Hampton Street and Jefferies Boulevard. The long-awaited center will be the focal part of the sanctuary, which is formerly known as the Great Swamp Sanctuary. The property was purchased using a HUD grant of up to $300,000, according to Mayor Bill Young. This grant was provided to the city with the assistance of Congressman Jim Clyburn, said Young.

If additional funding is found, the city hopes to turn a part of this property into an amphitheater, which will be an outdoor venue for concerts, festivals and other functions. “This is a concept, as council still has to vote on this idea and give its approval,” said Young.
