Citizen Service Open now open

Walterboro’s new Citizen Service Center is now open.

The newly-renovated building is a one-stop center for Walterboro residents who either want to pay their bills, get a permit or receive general information on the city’s services.

Specifically, the building puts all of the city’s main service needs under one roof. Various departments now reside in the building, including permits and licensing, the clerk for the city’s Municipal Court, building services and a general information desk.

The service center is located in the former First Federal Bank building, at 300 Hampton Street, near Walterboro City Hall. It was renovated and purchased with a combination of allocated funds from the city’s annual budget and grant funds.

City leaders chose to buy the building nearly two years ago and to renovate it. The plan is part of the city’s overall expansion and beautification projects. Creating the new service center was listed as one of Walterboro’s major goals and accomplishments in the city’s 2016-217 annual report.

“The opening of this facility is another step the city has taken to provide better customer service,” said Michelle Strickland, in a press release issued by the city on the building’s opening. The press release was disseminated to area media outlets last week by city leaders.

In addition to the new building opening this year, city leaders are also working on several other large public-focused projects. These include the city’s new sewer upgrades, ongoing refurbishment of interchanges along Exits 53 and 57 near Interstate 95 and construction of the new Discovery Center. The center will house animal exhibits and educational components about the Walterboro

Wildlife Sanctuary. Plans for the center also include construction of a new outdoor amphitheater and additional parking for those downtown-area attractions.
