Badkatz 12U wins first summer tournament

The former 12U Lowcounty Lightning softball team made a bold move before the summer travel ball season began by joining up with the South Carolina Badkatz organization. The Badkatz organization is an established travel ball club that fosters players who wish to take their game to the next level. The club currently has a 12U, 14U and 18U team. They are working on adding a 10U and 16U program as well. The 12U team is under the direction of Head Coach Johnny Voss who has been working with over half of his current roster since they were 8 years old either through recreation league or travel ball.

The team has been working tirelessly since most of them finished their school ball schedules in May with practices multiple times a week as well as a team camp and many players taking advantage of summer camp programs across the state. This past weekend their hard work paid off as they went undefeated in bracket play during the “Battle of the Bats” tournament hosted by USSSA at Gahagan Park in Summerville.

As the temperatures soared into triple digits the bats seemed to follow. The Badkatz began bracket play on Saturday evening rocking the Lady Rocks 4-0. On Sunday, they took on the Riptide taking them down 2-0. The third victory went into extra innings where the BadKatz took on their toughest competition in the Ryan Fowler South Carolina Sirens. They turned up the heat and won 4-3. After a one game break, the two competitors would face each other once again for the championship game where Coach Voss lead his team to a 7-1 victory. For their victory, Coach Voss has agreed to allowing his team wax his legs at practice this week.

Members of the 12U BadKatz are Brooke Smith, Briana Ohmer, McKenzie Seigler, McKenzie Beard, Jordan Slocum, Merin Moody, Maggie Kennedy, Chrissy Holmes, Makayla Voss and Brooke Crosby. Coach Voss is assisted by Jeff Slocum and Monica Beard.
