40th Annual Walterboro Band Classic

Crowds gathered at the Colleton County High School stadium on Saturday September 30th for the 40th annual Walterboro Band Classic. The Walterboro Band Classic is a competition for marching bands across the state to attend and compete. The Band of Blue host the event each year, however they do not preform. The weather for the event could not have been better, as a crowd of around 3,500 attended the event throughout the day and into the evening, according to Band of Blue Director Tom Finigan. The Judges for this year’s Band Classic were; Andre Feagin-Music Individual and Percussion, Greg Gajownik- Music Effect and DM, Bill Locklear- Music Ensemble and Horn Line, Bill Young-Visual Ensemble, Clark Cothran-Visual Individual, Clayton Parker-Visual Effect/Guard, and Casey Chubb-Drum Major. The showcase of talented bands began at 2:00pm with Division 1 Bands; Bamberg High School, A.C. Flora High School, May River High School, and Lake Marion High School. At 3:40pm the Division 2 bands performed; Beaufort High School, James Island High School, and West Ashley High School. At 5:20 the Division 3 bands performed; Berkeley High School, South Aiken High School, and Blufton High School. Division 4 bands began at 7:20pm; Cane Bay High School, Lugoff Elgin High School, and Effingham County. The conclusion of the Band Classic was the closing by the Colleton County High School, Band of Blue with the announcement of awards to follow. “A BIG thank you goes out to all of the parents, friends, and family that came out and made Saturday a huge success,” Director Finigan said, “The community support for this event is outstanding year after year.” This year’s Division winners were; Division 1- May River High School, Division 2- James Island High School, Divison 3- South Aiken High School, and Division 4- Lugoff Elgin High School. According to Director Finigan, as a way to honor Bill Young, retired Band of Blue Director who started the Walterboro Band Classic in 1977, the Band of Blue Booster Club recognized the highest scoring band of the day with the William T. Young “True Blue” Championship Trophy. In addition to Bill Young, other presenters for the Walterboro Band Classic Awards were Mrs. Gwen Bunton, Dr.Juliet Stoute-White, and Dr. Melissa Crosby. As for the Colleton County Band of Blue, the next four weeks are filled with competitions each weekend. Their next scheduled performance will be on Saturday October 7th at Charleston Southern University followed by the Coastal Empire Classic on October 14th, SCBDA Lower State Championship on October 21st, and the SCBDA Marching Band Championship on October 28th which will be held at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C. In addition to competitions, you can see the Band of Blue perform at the Colleton County High School Cougar Football games during half time as they bring to life their performance of “The Lost Boy.”
